Title: Georgian Bay Rocks
Post by: Grandpa Jim on May 18, 2013, 07:00:37 am
Previous post made mention of the presence of rocks having become visible in the Bay due to low water conditions. Brought back a story my brother shared. He had joined a friend at his island cottage for a week-end away from the wives. On Saturday night, they motored to the Delawana Inn and got excessively involved with the usual festivities. They decided to leave the boat and use a water taxi back to the cottage to be on the safe side. They were less than elated to discover the operator was one of the more exuberant revellers that had been at a nearby table. They took the chance and the taxi raced them back in the dark to the cottage. My brother paid the "cabbie" and told him that he had to know the location of every rock in the Bay. The local shook his head vehemently and responded "No way man! But I knows where they ain't!!" Classic Honey Harbour logic!!

Good one Jim and I think that has been the navigation theme for many on GBay for a long time. I must admit some of my routes out to the bay from Woods Bay were not very well known. I only knew if I stayed so far from certain rocks I was ok. Years later as the water began to decline and some of my routes dried up I realized just how close I was to a very expensive repair.

Yeah, you kinda know where to go.
Last year I could easily traverse certain areas and this year I won't even though I would still have 6" of water under me.
On a positive note I did go through hell's gate without a touch.

These are a little more difficult to see.

I was running up the from between Thompson's and Tomahawk Is past Webber through to the East passage of Bone Is last Thursday, Almost crapped my pants when we went through the dicey area. Objects aren't as close as they appear but it felt like we were almost touching bright pink granite on either side.

I know what you mean. I was just getting use to the water being a lot deeper than it looks as always in the clear spring water, then I hit one :D I was only creeping along but I do have a nice reminder on the bottom of my boat.

Ouch, that'll add character and a story!
