Title: The best source for wind forecast?
Post by: MarkD on August 30, 2019, 01:17:24 pm
I have a quite small boat to venture G bay. I can't go out to G bay with wind more than 8 knots and if it is West then it's limited to 5 knots.... So I have to watch the weather closely and need a good source of forecast.
Here is the problem. For example, right now on the Government website I can see this
Wind northwest 20 knots backing to west 20 near noon then diminishing to northwest 15 Saturday morning. Wind diminishing to light near noon Saturday.
https://weather.gc.ca/marine/forecast_e.html?mapID=10&siteID=05500
This means no way to go on Saturday morning for me.
However, Windfinder shows very moderate and, the most important, East wind at Saturday morning.

So, 15knots NW comparing to 5 East is the huge difference for me.
Whom to believe and any other ideas?
Thank you!

The marine forecast you are looking at is the most accurate.  The weather channels on a VHF radio are also good.  However the Bay is a fickle girl.  Most often the conditions are not what was forecast.  Wind direction matters and location you are fishing matters.  You get to know it after a while.

I have a 33ft Sea Ray and I don’t go out in 20 knots.  Too hard to control the boat in that wind.  I have to run on one engine to troll at the 2.5mph range and with the wind howling, its just too much of a pain in the a$$.  15 knots can be too much too and that is in my boat.  Depends on the wind direction.
