Anyone catching juvenile-young chinooks?
« on: July 22, 2020, 03:37:26 pm »
I am curious if anyone has caught many young chinooks (1-6 pound range) in the bay during summer.  I used to catch quite a few in Owen Sound/Colpoys bay back in the late 80's-late 90's in spring and up to 2010 ice fishing, but can't ever recall catching one from Meaford to Wasaga ever in summer.  In theory they should be scattered around the bay feeding.

I’ve heard of quite a few being caught this year.
When targeting bows in the upper water column, I often get in to a few.
They seem to handle water temps much like rainbows do.

I have always found it odd that I have never caught juvenile salmon on the Bay, unlike Lake Ontario where it was very common to catch tiny ones.  I think the smallest I ever caught was like 6 lbs (1.5  year old?)

It’s all I was catching in June. Had one smaller than the spoon I was using.

I was 6/6 the other day and they were all 8-15 but one was sub 1 lbs.

Have had a few 20inchers in the boat so far.   Good sign.

We usually catch one every trip out but always release them for good luck.
